Connect Connect...

What a weekend. Got some great drawings, met some wonderful folks, and asides from waking up in a puddle in my tent (with QuickDraw emblazoned on the side!! Not intended honestly!), spending more time than necessary in the mission to get an AAA pass, and a post festival uber-bug, I had a brilliant lovely time of it.
If you're looking for pictures, come back next week to have a swatch - I've chosen to not look at the pictures until next week and let my mind process all the experiences I had.
Thanks to all the behind the scenes people and the musicians for letting me draw them. Sigur Ros, most definitely a highlight - what an amazing show, and what beautiful folks they are too.

Make Model, A Review of My Show, and Bjork

A scan of the Bjork picture I am selling as a limited edition print, the original which is currently on show at the fabulous Roastit Bubbly Jocks restaurant, 450 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, for a limited time only - the owner has very kindly loaned it for the exhibition which is scheduled to finish at the end of June. The prints I am selling of this Bjork are minus the 'paper' which is the dull white colour around the drawing - I've made it a much cleaner final image - so if you're interested people...

http://www.glasgowwestend.co.uk/eating/eatingdrinking.php
Above is the link to an article written about my exhibition at Roastit's. Tis very complimentary.

Make Model - The lead singer Lewis Gale has left which has left them in a hollow state as he provided a lot of the writing if not all. But they sound stalwart and forward thinking. They've cancelled their Glastonbury and T in the Park gigs which must be pretty gutting. I've just read an article here - http://arts.guardian.co.uk/filmandmusic/story/0,,2203080,00.html which was written back in November 2007 which is full of hope and ideas. So why has Lewis left??

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it's Go North in Dundee this weekend which is free and full of hopefuls, hopefully good music and industry delegates. http://www.gonorth.biz/ Looks like a fun filled informative weekend. There is also RockNess, http://www.rockness.co.uk/which is not free, further away, but has a fantastic line up. Wonder what I'll do...where I'll stay...

Festival time now, really need to buy a tent - can't rely on the folks' one anymore; I'm a big girl now...However, I really do fancy spending my nights during at least one festival in a yurt/teepee/podpad - they just sound so quirky, fun and ready made!! Luxury! That will of course happen as much as the chance of my ambition to travel first class on a sleeper...

Bit of a Newsletter/Connect/Expo/Big Draw

Big Draw in Schools, organised by CAST, October 22nd – November 9th 2007

What an amazing experience this was. Organised by CAST (Creative Arts in Schools Team), I got to travel around 14 very different primary schools in Argyll, my home county, and do drawing workshops with them!! Perfect job! I got to play about with loads of like-minded beings, command the games, and do loads of drawings to music; all inspired by my own live drawing practice!! And what a stunning part of the world I live in, really! There were so many highlights (as well as the low ones!) but one particular memorable experience was working with two excluded boys who were more artistic than they thought they were. Here’s something that I’d really like to pursue, however I need to make sure I’m successful as an independent artist though – I can’t help anyone if I’m a hypocrite.

If you would like a little insight into what I did with the different schools, you can take a look at an example on http://www.pcps.ik.org/p_Jenny_Soep.ikml, which is a link to a page dedicated to my visit by Port Charlotte Primary on Islay. I was really blown away by how up-to-date, innovative, enthusiastic, well organised and technologically ‘in touch’ this school was. You can check it out on - http://www.pcps.ik.org. You can also email me on info@jennysoep.com if you’re interested to know more, or would like me to come your school. I’ll be most happy to supply you with references.

Open Mike/Open Draw October 13th

The day after was a bit of an experiment as part of the Big Draw – a nationwide drawing event launched in October up until November – look it up under http://www.drawingpower.org.uk for some drawing inspiration! You too can hold a drawing event next year! Anyhoo, I organised an Open Mic/Open Draw as part of my exhibition, with Garry again providing some VJing support for young and old artists alike. We also had ‘Sound’ support from Stevo and Louie from the grand old Oban open mike nights that Garry and I have been providing a bit of visual entertainment for! Thanks guys!!

We had solid live music from various different wonderful musicians from mid-day till 4pm with the Sorren MacLean band and friends, my lovely friends/blues band ‘Bluescaster’, the wonderful and enigmatic Matt Goodwin from the smiley U.S. of A, and complete troopers The Lemmings who traipsed up all the way from Glasgae to play a stomping set – Stu on the Rose Tin Drum and Key Chain Plimpsole, as well as Ben Fitzgerald doing an excellent Lap Tapping session. We were also very privileged to have Liz Lochhead there to recite a couple of her raunchiest and sweetest poems. My own dear Nana even hobbled up on her crutches – recent hip operation – to give us ‘The Old Violin’. You could have heard a pin drop!

Thanks MAJORIS to everyone who gave us help and support – very much appreciated, especially to our sponsors, to Maria my mum – world porridge making champion 2007!! - for helping out with the canapĂ©s and other morsels of marvellousness, the Sinclair family for all their help and support, Andrew Sinclair for his belief, help, support, gallery etc etc –
Andy Stuart for his interjection of assistance the night before while I Chicken-headed around, and lastly Kim – superb sister of mine who was The Best event organiser/designer, artiste liaison, and canapĂ© creator I’ve ever had. Can definitely recommend her although, I’d hate to lose her…

Solo Show, Resipole Studios, Ardnamurchan, October 12-28th

October came round with my exhibition which opened on the 12th with the fabulous Sorren MacLean band who filled in for Popup who’d got lost on the way to the Ardnamurchan via Ardrishaig from Glasgow…Better send them proper directions next time. Martin Hay from the Yellow Bentines entertained the audience with his one-man band replacing his normal entourage of drummer, two trumpeters, a guitarist and bassist. The boy did well until after the after show party when he got lost in his own caravan…Garry Whitton, leading local animator was on hand with his cunning animations/filming/time-lapsing/VJ-ing wizardry of my drawings and the live happenings.

Connect Festival, August 31-Sept 2nd 2007.

A great first experience for a ‘Wee Boutique’ festival that used lots of great local services/foods/drinks/location and a fantastic array of international and home-grown music talent. Great shows, onsite alternative entertainment, late night partying… Will just state though, that camping was pretty sketchy, particularly in the rain, and I heard a few people got fleeced by a gang of head-torch donned ‘tea leaves’. Don’t be a wally and leave valuables in your tent!!

Highlights – drawing Bjork, Areogramme, King Creosote, Bat for Lashes, The Beastie Boys, LCD Soundsystem, Seasick Steve and quite a few others! A very memorable weekend. Getting to hang out in the Press Pit while the photographers got moved on (guess the security felt sorry my slow ass!) and finish my pictures was really quite exciting. My brother Ben capitalised on being my ‘gopher’ boy and running round the back of the stages after each performance to chat to the musicians while I tidied up my materials. Think I’ve got that the wrong way round…

James Cadd - Music Photographer

Get this one of me!! Don't I look like I know what I'm doing! James Cadd, underrated music photographer who needs to be paid WAY more for what he does.
He's also taken a couple of very nice pics of me in action. As you can see! Check out the rest of his blog http://www.flickr.com/photos/cadd to see what other brilliant gigs he's documented. And pay up people - it's a hard life documenting music and proving you're original.

Emma Pollock, Connect Festival

Emma Pollock, Drawn on Saturday Morning at Connect - invited at the last minute she played well under her alias 'TBC'. A fine Songstress and lovely lady. Always a joy to draw, and always room for more.
Just to say Emma Pollock will be playing in the Pacific Quay along with The Dykeenies, and The Royal We on Monday night hosted by Vic Galloway as a sort of House Warming - sounds like great fun - I think you can get your free tickets by calling the Radio Scotland number which you'll be able to find on their website - that's if they're not gone already!

The Challenging Pictures from Connect, and the rules behind 'accentuation'.

Modest Mouse washed away in the rain

Echo and the Bunny Men - After Modest Mouse I managed to get a drier seat.

I managed to draw this from side-stage which was pretty cool, but cramped and badly lit - hence muddiness. This picture is in it's raw state and I'm going to have a go accentuating it to how I remember the event. But time is ticking on, and my memory is fading somewhat. Accentuating requires peace and quiet where I'm not disrupted - this is a bit challenging without an actual studio, but that's something to be remedied.

No radio, no answering of telephones, no music apart from that of the band in the picture. Especially no TV. Without these distractions and with functional broadband to listen to music and view photographs to confirm minor details, accentuation of festival pictures will take about 2 days. With distractions, it can take a week. Hence, it's Thursday.
I also want to include the same photo of Echo and the B without my adding 'auto levels' in Photoshop since although the picture is a little darker, the colours are more realistic.

Should add Patrick Wolf, just because I wasn't initially going to see him since it was rather a trek from one side of the festival to the other by myself with all my materials, just to trek back for Aqualung in the Manicured Noise tent, and other acts in Your Sound and Guitars and Other Machines stage. As it was it was a last minute decision, and thankfully, I was quite pleased with the resulting picture even though I only got less than 15 minutes. Patrick seemed to like it too. A lot of the musicians seemed to think I was doing it for free for them, without realising this is how I plan to support myself as an artist. A lot of people like what I do, but pricing it is tricky. I'll reserve talks about pricing for another post. Meanwhile here's Patrick plus detail.

Bjork Madness

Oh bugger. I just wiped off my humerous little observations; how to be as factual and witty in this next edition...

Suffice to say Bjork has been irritating me all afternoon - 3 hours to hum, haw and accentuate one of the pics I did of her - the other had mud and red wine oh so artfully placed by random members in the audience. Quite intrigued to see how these tangible souvenirs can be made into assets rather than faults regarding composition.

LCD Soundsytem is a much clearer picture, and I wonder if perhaps trying to draw all the many ingredients to Bjork's performance was necessary. At this moment in time I think it was, as to not have included them would have seemed an injustice to 'drawing the experience'.

As it is I most definitely need to refine my 'festival drawings' approach; Firstly, I might need a bit of cover from any rain. My picture of Modest Mouse was washed away infront of my eyes due to the incessant drizzle (a few looks from bewildered people as to what I was trying to do) - I didn't want my brother to hold a brolly as it would have blocked people's view. I may try to add colour/detail from memory, or just recycle it. Hopefully next year, my fellow animator Garry Whitton and I will be able to strut our stuff in a more sheltered set-up. I have plans people, oh yes, I have plans!!! You can check Garry's animations and time lapse of my drawings here at http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.channel&ChannelID=224541549

Then there was the misplaced judgement of the pre-Bjork act M.I.A in offering free reign to the audience to come up on stage, trampling with complete disregard as to where their clumpy mud encrusted footwear was placed (stationary audience members' headspace, my brushes, canvases!) - twas an onslaught of mooning drunk folk and joyful fame chasers - meanwhile MIA was given the red card by the unprepared security folk!!! I have to say though, it was amusing having a bit of unplanned excitement at Inverary Castle's first 'boutique festival' - though a few disgruntled and dishevelled Bjork fans would probably disagree.

Anyway, time is ticking away while I blether on. Will update soon.

LCD Soundsystem and Connect Festival

What an amazing weekend. Full of amazing music, acts, performances, food, people. Yep, there was mud, rain, and theft - people - don't be carrying valuables or big wads of cash or leaving them in your tent at festivals - most people are lovely and peace loving folk, but some people go with a mission to rob you blind. Don't be a numpty. But apart from all that, it was a brilliant first festival in a stunning setting (especially when the sun shone!)

Anyway, here's the first installment from the festival. I've deliberately chosen not to delete the 'paper' out of the picture just as an experiment though I'm still undecided on the presentation. More later.
